Click on the above pic to visit our sister site Bear Alley Books Monday, April 30, Fleetway Super Library I was planning to get some pictures up yesterday evening of the comics fair at the Royal National but when I got back home I found there was an interesting e-mail waiting for me from Romano Felmang asking about a series of British comics that had appeared in the late Sixties. It just so happens that I picked up about half a dozen of these only recently to add to my still very incomplete collection.
And yes, I recognised Romano’s name immediately — he’s very well known in Italy as the artist of The Phantom amongst other things, although I believe only one episode has ever appeared over here in the UK when Wolf Publishing produced a short run of Phantom comics in the early s. The series Romano mentioned was the Fleetway Super Library which appeared in and which has some claims to being Britain’s first ever series of original graphic novels. These were an experiment based on the already established pocket library which had been appearing in the UK since April and the debut of Cowboy Comics.
Dorothy Leigh Sayers (/ s ɛər z /; 13 June – 17 December ) was a renowned English crime writer and poet. She was also a student of classical and modern languages. She is best known for her mysteries, a series of novels and short stories set between the First and Second World Wars that feature English aristocrat and amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey, which remain popular to this day.
Title Index Preface to the Second Edition Before the publication of the first edition of Bestsellers in information about best-selling novels was still clouded with contradictions and evidence was partial, scattered and sometimes merely incorrect. Factual evidence about how people read in Britain and why was still missing or was unavailable except in books on library borrowing, books which were often difficult to find.
Discussions of taste and value which had dominated English studies for almost sixty years were open to challenge and old prejudices had to be put aside. Nowadays, even after the cultural history and reception of best-selling fiction has become a recognised area of interest, snobbishness still clouds our judgement about what makes up English Literature and creates distorted and repeated half truths about how values circulate in a print economy which is commercially driven by publishers and booksellers.
Even authors continue to repeat some of the cant against popular commercial fiction. Rarely do they have anything other than their own experiences, either good or bad, to go on. In the first edition of Bestsellers, I attempted to provide proper information about the state of the last hundred years of reading — what reading actually meant and how books were bought and circulated. It was a study of the hundred years of the twentieth century and that century was passing, but just as it did new selling techniques began and new book sensations arrived, enough indeed to warrant the present volume which has been greatly expanded to cover the changes that have occurred as well as saying something about all the new authors that have appeared.

Plot[ edit ] On the afternoon of 10 November, ninety-year-old General Fentiman is called to the deathbed of his estranged sister, Lady Dormer, and learns that under the terms of her will he stands to inherit most of her substantial fortune – money sorely needed by his grandsons Robert and George Fentiman. However, should the General die first, nearly everything will go to Lady Dormer’s companion, Ann Dorland. Lady Dormer dies the next morning, Armistice Day , and that afternoon the General is found dead in his armchair at the Bellona Club.
Dr Penberthy, a Club member and the General’s personal physician, certifies death by natural causes but is unable to state the exact time of death. As the estate would amply provide for all three claimants, and as it is unknown whether the General or his sister died first, the Fentiman brothers suggest a negotiated settlement with Ann Dorland, but she surprisingly and vehemently refuses.
Wimsey is asked to investigate. Unusually, nobody saw the General arrive at the Club at his usual time of 10 am. His manservant reports that the General did not return home after visiting his sister the day before. An unknown man by the name of Oliver telephoned to say that the General would be spending the night with him.

Some authors choose not to weave those larger social climates and events into their work. When they do, it seems to work most effectively if those larger things are, if I can put it this way, in the background. In that way, both the author and the reader can focus on the characters and the plot at hand. If that happens, those larger events and social contexts can add a sense of time and place to a novel. Heron Park Hospital has been converted for wartime use, and as the story begins, seven different people are going to the hospital to work in different capacities.
One day, a postman named Joseph Higgins is brought the hospital with a broken femur. Later that night, she is murdered. Now, Cockrill investigates both deaths as murders, and finds out who the killer is. Rather, the focus is on the hospital and the characters involved. So, it was a shock to the family to learn that Cloade had married. It was an even worse shock when he died intestate. Now, everything will likely go to his widow, Rosaleen. Then, a stranger, who calls himself Enoch Arden comes to town.

There is no dating evidence in the story for this date as far as I can see, and it seems unlikely to me that the village would hold a flowershow in – it was the middle of the war, and flower beds had all be converted to fruit and vegetable patches.
