A Jewish kid from Providence, Rhode Island, Schwartz’s first exposure to the Orange County lifestyle was at the University of Southern California, where he attended film school in the mid s. It was there that he met the ” species known as the water polo player ,” and the idea for The O. But no one could have imagined that a hyper self-aware primetime soap starring veteran actor Peter Gallagher, Mischa Barton, and a cast of relative unknowns would become a cultural phenomenon.
Not to mention, it’s a fashion time capsule for the early aughts, when douchebags still rocked puka shell necklaces and the prettiest girl in school would pair a hip-hugging jean skirt with flip flops and a polo shirt. Welcome to a life of insecurity and paralyzing self-doubt. And yet, during the show’s initial ascent into the pop-culture stratosphere, Schwartz had no idea what the fuck he was doing.
There wasn’t a lot of time to think about how in-over-our-heads we probably were, but [executive producer] Stephanie [Savage] did tell me when the show got ordered, ‘This is going to change your life, and you are going to come out of this experience a different person than you are going into it. For a primetime soap devotee like Savage, the idea of a show centered on male friendship instantly struck a chord.
The idea of a nighttime soap opera that’s driven through these male relationships. That was a light-bulb moment for me. Originally, the network wasn’t so down with having a nerdy, self-deprecating, extremely self-aware kid at the center of the sexy soap. Everyone got very self-aware very quickly. Savage quickly became his right-hand woman.
Things you only notice in The O. Despite airing in and catering to an audience of then-teens, so much of Josh Schwartz ‘s seminal show remains super relevant today, which means revisiting our pals in Orange County always guarantees a good time. Yet, it’s not just getting back into the Cali groove that keeps us coming back for more.
Sure, Summer wasn’t exactly thrilled when Seth and Anna first started dating, but even she knew that, at the end of the day, things wouldn’t work out between the comic book-obsessed couple.
This happened to me the other night. A dear friend and I were talking about our kids and how to help them transition from children to adults. The topic of dating and relationships came up and we started talking about my story. It somehow validates my belief that some of the teachings I grew up with were very wrong.
Fear of loving and losing. Fear of making the wrong choice. Fear of getting hurt. Fear of being damaged. Fear of not measuring up.
In what episode of the O.C. do Seth and Summer start dating?
Summer shows were considered little more than schedule-filler. Series creator Josh Schwartz was only 26—the youngest showrunner in network television at the time—and had never produced a TV show. Suffice it to say, the deck was not stacked in The O. The summer start-date enabled Fox to air the now-infamous pilot three times while growing a devoted audience. Abandoned by his mother, troubled teen Ryan Atwood McKenzie is taken in by the Cohens, a loving family living in the affluent community of Newport Beach, California.
Seth Cohen Brody transitions from friendless high-school outcast to dating the girl of his dreams.
Instead of any of the above, Seth takes off for the summer, leaving Summer only a single letter to explain why he couldn’t be in The O.C. without his ultimate bro, Ryan. Of course, he still had.
Conception[ edit ] Creator Josh Schwartz described Alex as “the bad girl who runs the Bait Shop, which is the new club the kids are going to be hanging out at where all these bands will be performing at. She’s our ” Nat ” Beverly Hills , if you will. He asks Alex and she says that the show is sold out and that he’d have to work there to get tickets, and ends up hiring him. Seth convinces her to go on a date with Ryan “The New Era” , with himself and Lindsay joining to make it a double date.
It turns out that Ryan and Alex have very little in common, and when the date is over Seth goes back to The Bait Shop and apologizes to her for the horrible night, in which she replies that he’s bratty and immature, but also charming. She says there is hope for him yet, and Seth asks her to go for ice cream. She kisses him on the stairs as they leave, and share ice cream on the pier.

Liman was on set in Canada and in urgent need of a new female lead after deciding that the original cast year-olds Tom Sturridge and Teresa Palmer were too young. September Learn how and when to remove this template message Carina Chocano of Entertainment Weekly described Seth as “a nuanced portrait of a true-to-life dork [whose] relationship to Ryan is full of nice little ironies. He has a positive nature, and although sometimes his humor is misconceived as ill-mannered, he tries to joke his way out of sticky situations and is more likely to laugh off the negatives and be overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the positives in his, and everyone else’s, life.
He is shown throughout the series to be self-obsessed and neurotic, with a tendency to make himself the center of attention. However, in many episodes , he proves to be a sweet and genuine guy with good intentions and a good heart, and this is often overlooked by others. Seth is a very bubbly character, thanks to the likes of his “only true friend” Ryan, and is prone to not knowing when to keep his mouth shut, however this is more endearing and humorous, than irritating.
He is a self-proclaimed geek and likes comic books, science fiction, video games, and old movies. He also has a toy horse named Captain Oats. Seth is close to both of his parents and often playfully teases them. Though he occasionally will not accept their help or advice, he does so sometimes and seems to value their opinions and knows they would do anything for him and vice versa.

You should feel very proud of your public school football tradition and the tradition of your whole area. December 29th, at 1: To suggest the Quips play 3a because its the easiest path to a state title is absolutely ludicrous and at some level insulting. I agree this past year 3a was the weakest level on a relative basis although Jeanette would not have won 3a but the Quips CHOOSE to play up in what is proven to be the top district at that 3a level.
They picked the hardest road to their own district championship and did it at least in part to play against their traditional rivals as their enrollment has shrunk. Making that suggestion even more absurd is they played up in the four class system when the levels were not watered down like they are today.
